Tall Truths
Solo Exhibition at Slouch Gallery
May 2022
Tall Truths is a body of work antagonizing the role of progress and other beliefs, or myths, such as capital, creation, and dominion, in human survival. Abstracted woven imagery reflects on these notions and their connection to rising oceans, global supply chains, and consumer waste. These modified twill tapestries reference the commodification of textiles and expand upon long-standing tapestry traditions, most notably the illusion of bas relief, and reference fiber in its most primal form. Dynamic utilization of positive and negative space creates a sense of depth or engraving in two dimensional cloth. A culmination of additive (woven) and subtractive (deconstructed) processes, this work utilizes exposed yarn to demonstrate the singularity of thread within the cloth. This exposure signifies the precarity of the systems in which we live and work, antagonizing the limits of function, pondering:
Is it too late? Was it supposed to be this way? What happens next?
